On Saturday, May 14, 2016, Environment Erie's annual "Bike Around the Bay" will take place at Presque Isle State Park. As of this year, all rides will begin and end at the Cookhouse Pavilion and lunch will be served at the Rotary Pavilion. This event is open to both individuals and families.
According to Kaitlyn Vitale of Environment Erie, "Bike Around the Bay is a great way for families or individuals to get outdoors and be active, all while supporting Environment Erie and their educational programs. Between riders and volunteers, we have 400 participants each year!"
All participants are encouraged to register by May 5, 2016 for a free "Bike Around the Bay" T-shirt. The cost for individual participation is $25, with a guaranteed T-shirt and water bottle. The registration cost for families is $50, with water bottles for all riders included. Families must have 3 people or more in order to be eligible to participate in the event.
"Bike Around the Bay" offers three different bike tours for participants to choose from. The first is the Park Tour, which is a 10-mile ride that is designed for beginners or families with children. The second ride, the Bay Tour, is a 30-mile route around the Bayfront and Presque Isle that is perfect for casual riders. Finally, the Endurance Tour takes experienced riders on a 50-mile ride around the Bayfront, Presque Isle, and Elk Creek. Regardless of experience, all riders in "Bike Around the Bay" are required to wear helmets.
Some major sponsors of the event include Penn State Behrend, the Pennsylvania Sea Grant, UPMC Health Plan, UPMC Hamot, the Peter A. Yeager Memorial Foundation, Lamar Advertising Company, and the Whole Foods Co-op.
